Children of Alcoholics
Alcoholism is excessive and repetitive drinking of alcoholic beverages to the extent that the drinker repeatedly harms or harms others. It is also a medical condition that is caused by regularly drinking a large amount of alcohol and not being able to stop. It runs in families, and children of alcoholics are four times more likely than other children to become alcoholics themselves.
Children of alcoholics don't get many of their emotional needs met due to these challenges, they will end up having a fear of abandonment, fear of authority, have low self-esteem and often isolate themselves. Also, they are prone to worrying, anxiety, hyperactivity, depression and have difficulties regulating negative emotions and internalizing their bodily symptoms. They are likely to engage in relationships with others who do alcohol abuse because it creates a sense of safety whereas they ain't safe to try new behaviour.
If you're both parents or one of your parents is an alcoholic, please be kind to yourself. It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. This proverb has never been wrong and it is more accurate for children of alcoholics. Surround yourself with safe and encouraging individuals who are ready and able to fill in the gaps left by the addicted parent.
